First edition of Artists’ Marathon is a work that took place in parallel with the 33rd London Marathon, on Sunday April 21st, 2013. Two bombs had exploded at the Boston marathon six days before, killing three spectators, and London came out in force in solidarity with the tragedy that was a violence attack on a large- scale, peaceful event. Whilst the marathon is a huge participatory gathering involving more than 34,000 people, the two artists are seen as small figures here, emphasising the contrast but also their small-scale solidarity from an artist’s perspective. The artists ran for four hours in the vast space of the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, inviting participants to join them as they ran. It can be seen as a metaphor for artistic stamina, training and human will power, linking artistic endeavours to sportsmanship, community and self-determination.
